This is message number 0119
Mid Kent Neighbourhood policing teams are leading a focused push to tackle criminal damage and other crimes that become more of a problem for people during this time of year.
Over the next few weeks, officers and staff will be taking targeted action across the six policing areas in the first of a series of seasonal Safer Kent campaigns.
Safer Spring sees neighbourhood patrols and partner agencies working to reduce criminal damage, anti-social behaviour, burglary and theft.

Patrols will work with communities to prevent this type of crime and there will be a series of activities to disrupt criminal behaviour and arrest people who have committed offences.
Mid Kent Police is also raising awareness on how people can stay safe and keep their property safe too.

Help keep your property safe:
Be vigilant and report any incidents or suspicions relating to criminal damage or antisocial behaviour.
Do not leave windows open or valuables near windows.
Keep sheds and garages locked at all times, as this may act as an invitation to an opportunist thief.
Be aware that lighter, summer clothing may reveal where your wallet, mobile phone or media player is kept.
Do not carry large amounts of cash and ensure that you keep your PIN numbers safe.
Keep car windows and sunroofs locked. Do not leave valuables on view and remove or conceal and secure satellite navigation equipment and radios.
Boat owners preparing their vessel for the summer should ensure that equipment such as radio, GPS systems and outboard motors are safe and secure. Boat owners are also encouraged to keep records and photographs of their boat's identification numbers and markings.
You can also join a neighbourhood watch scheme. For further details call the Swale NhW support office on freephone 0808 100 3308. Further information on your local neighbourhood policing team can be found on the Kent Police website at www.kent.police.uk

2. Lottery Scam
Police in Mid Kent are warning people not to be taken in by another letter scam, which appears to come from a Spanish company called "Loteria Primitiva", based in Madrid. The letter informs the recipient they have won hundreds of thousands of pounds in a new international lottery and that they must claim it within a couple of weeks. The letter asks for an attached form to be filled in with personal information such as names, addresses and bank account details. Police advise anyone who receives this sort of letter not to reply or telephone the numbers, which are included in the letter but to throw it away immediately.

Virus Alert
I have received this warning. Whether or not it is referring to a genuine virus is unknown but better safe than sorry!

Dear all,
I received this today, I have no idea how genuine it is, but it is worth passing on -
I've received the attached from a normally reliable source & thought it worthy of passing on.
Anyone-using Internet mail such as Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL and so on. This information arrived this morning, direct from both Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail with a Power Point presentation "Life is beautiful."
If you receive it DO NOT OPEN THE FILE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, and delete it immediately. If you open this file, a message will appear on your screen saying: "It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful". Subsequently you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password. This is a new virus which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti virus software's are not capable of destroying it. The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself "life owner". Roger Woodall, Deputy Co-ordinator, Newnham Neighbourhood Watch

'Safe Plates' initiative - Wednesday 14 March
This nationwide problem, where plates are stolen from existing vehicles, allows criminals to 'clone' other cars whilst innocent motorists can incur speeding fines, congestion charges and other offences as a result.
Members of the public are invited to come along to the 'Safe Plates' day in the car park of Asda on Mill Way, Sittingbourne between 9am and 3pm. Drivers can bring their cars along where they will have their number plate screws replaced with anti-tamper screws then covered with a security cap as an added deterrent free of charge.

  Bulletin No.002/07 - January 2007

1. GENERAL
To any boat-owners:
I have received the following message:

"Dear all, I am delighted to be able to attach a guide to the use of personal watercraft. Kent has over 250 miles of coastline and over 500 miles of rivers.
The use of jet skis and other forms of marine craft continue to grow year on year. Kent Police and partner agencies are working to tackle this growing threat to public safety and with the support of NhW and Country Eye members we can ensure that the right resources are put in the right places at the right time. Continual updates will be available on the Kent Police and Kent Coastal Network websites.
Chief Inspector Harrison
Partnership and Crime Reduction
FHQ"
Note from Roger Woodall: If the guide to which it refers is of interest to you, please let me know, and I will forward it by request to nnw@abelgratis.co.uk .

2. This is message number 0039
Between 7.15am on the 26th and 7.15am on the 30th January there has been a significant increase in criminal damage to vehicles (25) reported all over the Swale area. Please, if you see any of the offences being committed dial 999. If the offenders have moved on please get as complete description of the offenders as possible and also in which direction they made off. Then phone the police on 01622 636 313.

3. Bird 'Flu
The confirmed cases of Avian Influenza in Suffolk may be of concern but the swift measures taken by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) have significantly reduced the risk of the virus spreading.
Avian Influenza is a disease of birds, not humans. There have been human deaths from the H5N1 strain outside of the UK only, these are extremely rare and have only been when the person has been in constant close contact with birds. (Worldwide there have been 62 cases where 12000 'normal flu' deaths are reported in the UK annually).

Avian Influenza is NOT an air-borne disease and is spread by movement of infected birds or in contact with respiratory secretions, and in particular faeces. There is minimal public risk and this should not affect day-to-day activities.
There is no risk from eating poultry but the World Health Organisation recommends that meat should be cooked to at least 70 degrees centigrade and eggs should be thoroughly cooked.

DEFRA have set up a telephone hotline to answer queries in relation to Bird Flu and their number is 08459 33 55 77 Any queries should be directed to this helpline
many thanks - PC Mick wright

Further Information can be found on the DEFRA website at http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/notifiable/disease/ai/index.htm4.

Anti-social Behaviour
Another quoted note:
"Dear all, please see the attached leaflet that has been produced by the young people of Kent. It is the first of its kind in the UK and is being circulated nationally by the Home Office as an example of good practice. Many of the Young People involved are scheduled to present at the Kent County Neighbourhood Watch Association seminar later this year titled 'Young People the Right of Reply' (date to be announced). A very big well done to all those young people that were involved. many thanks - Mick"

Again, note from Roger Woodall: If the guide to which it refers is of interest to you, please let me know, and I will forward it by request to nnw@abelgratis.co.uk .

  Bulletin No.001/07 - January 2007

New Shelve Farm, Ashford road, Lenham between 00:01 1st Nov 06 & 12th Jan 07. Two yellow Barford dumper trucks and three red and white Kubota diggers were taken.

CZ/000628/07 Police in Mid Kent are asking people to be vigilant after a number of thefts of Kent Peg tiles from church roofs. The warning comes after three incidents in the Mid Kent area where thieves have climbed up on the roofs of churches in East Sutton, Sutton Valence and Harrietsham, and stolen some of the Kent Peg tiles. Officers believe the thieves may be getting away with it because people in the area assume they are legitimately working on the church roof. If you are at all suspicious that someone maybe taking tiles, please check with the owner of the building or, if this is not possible, call the police.

Also, we have had a number of incidences of property taken from sheds and outbuildings. can I ask that you alert your members to take a close look at the security of their outbuilding and to mark items with their postcodes. If you do wish any further advice, we have leaflets, and the Neighbourhood watch also sells shed alarms at a very reasonable price.

This is message number.0036
Criminal damage to vehicles, theft from vehicles and theft of vehicles continues to rise all over the Swale area, with no particular pattern emerging. Please make sure your vehicles and those of your members are left secure and in well lit area's, also report any persons acting suspicously to the Police on 999. Thank you.

  Bulletin No. 030/06 - December 2006

I have received this request to circulate details of a dog which was possibly stolen from Doddington.-
"We believe our dog was stolen on christmas day outside our house in Doddington, on Seed Road. We have contacted both the police and doglost.co.uk and we would appreciate it if you could tell everybody on your mailing list. She is a minature jack russell, white and tan in colour, has a full tail and is spayed. She is approximately 2 years old and her name is Fudge. We believed that she was stolen at around 4pm on christmas day. Shortly before she went missing we saw a large vehicle, possibly a Ford transit or 4WD stop outside our house and then drive off. We do not know if it's related. Thanks for all your help.
Clare & Tony Dady"

Community Messaging Service
We are asking for your help over the Christmas period. Over the last two years we have seen a number of Cash Point ATM, Ram Raids, using a variety of vehicles. At this time of the year the collateral impact of these ram raids is huge. The local community is seriously inconvenienced, as the perception and fear of crime significantly increases.
Kent Police are doing all we can to deliver a good service to the Public and to detect these crimes and more importantly to prevent further crimes from occurring. However we need your help.
We want to locate and map all current building sites in Kent, that are using Plant Machinery such as JCB Diggers, Dump Trucks, Bob Cats and so on. You as the local eyes and ears on the street will know if there is a building site in your area. Will you please return any information via email to the address shown below, at your earliest convenience, thank you.
Of course it goes without saying to please contact us if you see one of these vehicles moving at a suspicious time of night or location, particularly between 10.00pm and 05.00am, using 999.

Dear all, I'm sorry to say that a very nice 6th century pendant in the attached picture was stolen recently. It was in a van that was stolen from the finder, and so it is likely that the thief has no particular knowledge of small finds and doesn't realise what he has (a unique find that is one of only about a dozen known). Luckily the pendant is fully recorded in the PAS database (KENT-CC59C7) and so if this find does surface it will be easily recognised. The pendant is garnet-inlaid with some gilding and may be in a bag that says what it is....therefore the theif may well assume it is worth money and try to sell it in a museum, to a dealer, or on eBay. Could someone notify eBay I wonder? Contact Newnham Neighbourhood Watch for an image of this item. It would be great if we could recover this; it is the only one of its kind ever found in Kent.
PC Mick Wright

Kent Trading Standards would like to make you aware of the following:
Comsumers may receive a card posted through their door or an E-mail
from a trader called PDS ( Parcel Delivery Service). The card or E-
mail suggests that the sender was unable to deliver a parcel and that
they need to be contacted on 0906 6611911. This is a premium rate
number charged at a minimum of #1.50 per minute. Consumers are
advised NOT to call.

Received information on this scam is that ICTIS have closed it down
and hence new messages are no longer valid. The common sense
approach is to regard all such items as suspicious.

I have received the following report from a local resident for
circulation. All parents should be aware of a potential risk from
persons shadowing school buses in rural areas and take action as
recommended:

Two young girls got off the school bus in Brogdale Road, Faversham at
approximately 3.43pm. today and were alarmed to see a car slow down
as it came level with them as they were walking in the direction of
Faversham, south of the motorway. The vehicle - a light navy or mid-
blue estate-car driven by a middle-aged bearded man accompanied by a
female passenger of a similar age - kept pace with them for some
seconds as they walked towards the home of one of the girls. The
girls said they were being closely watched by the two occupants of
the car. The girls, sensing danger, then went into the garden of the
next house they came to (not their own), and started to walk up the
path to the front door. At this point the car drove off.
The police have been informed but, as the descriptions from the two
girls were rather vague, and no words were exchanged, they can only
note the incident.
I feel that all children coming home from school should be reminded
of "Stranger Danger" and warned to be vigilant.

Kent Trading Standards have received a number of reports about doorstep sales of household goods. The salesmen are young men. They may carry cards that they use as ID cards. Some times they will claim to be down on their luck in some way; for example, ,jobless, homeless or on probation. Kent Trading Standards have received reports of threatening and bullying tactics being used to make householders buy their goods. The sellers seem to be more likely to try pressurize older or vulnerable people into making a purchase. Kent Trading Standards advise householders to be vigilant and report similar incidents to the Kent Police on 01622 690690.
