Barrack Row

Barrack Row, shown here before the First World War, was built in the mid-1840s from materials salvaged from barracks demolished at Sheerness. The row of cottages mark the site of a fire which occurred in 1844, destroying 14 houses and leaving 70 people homeless.

The disaster was recorded by Vicar James Bower who noted in the church register that although three fire engines from Sittingbourne and Faversham quenched the flames, it was impossible to prevent the loss of property and goods although no lives were lost.
