INSCRIPTION FREELY TRANSLATED

"Sacred to the memory of John Hulse of Newnham, Gentleman.

In this shallow urn are preserved the ashes from this immoveable little corner the soul has passed over and flown up to stand with the angels and join the souls or (his) ancestors.

To that place, much loved of God
wither, amongst mortals distinguished by love of the poor, foresight and great influence around us on Earth, perpeptual monuments he, 40 years not yet completed
was, by a fatal illness unhappily translated

He departed the second February 1681 and in the same year of mourning this (memorial) was errected by (his) widow
with most sorrowful countenance and like mind
